SELLICK A SUCCESS !
The Nottinghamshire junior golfing season got off to a flying start at the Bulwell Forest Golf Club with the opening event the ever popular Cyril Sellick Memorial Trophy. More than a hundred youngsters, including a number of girls, all under the age of 18 years, representing the majority of the County's golf club, were treated to a feast of golf in fine weather conditions.
Joe Asquith [Retford] set the course alight with a scintillating round of 80, off a handicap of 28, for a nett 52, to win the principal prize by 6 strokes from Tom Burrows of Trent Lock GC, with Callum Fern [Cotgrave Place] a further stroke back. Whilst, Martin Allen [Stanton on the Wolds] returned the best gross score of 69. The talented Rhiannon Linacre [Coxmoor] led the girls with a gross 88 -28 - 60.

Cyril Sellick was a member here at Bulwell Forest Artisans Golf Club, and a County player of some note in the early / mid part of the last century.
It was said, that he was a player who could drive the ball ‘furiously long and straight’, despite his tragic set back. Cyril struggled against adversity – having been involved in a local Colliery accident at the age of 18, when it was necessary for him to have a leg amputated. Despite that set back, six years later he won his one and only Nottinghamshire Amateur Stroke-Play Championship, in 1933, 75 years ago this year. The Artisans had a great team which also won the County Team event that year. And where was that Championship played? You’ve got it ... Wollaton Park, our County Course for this year ... what a coincidence that is !
I am sure Cyril would have been proud of us recording these facts here today, at Bulwell Forest Golf Club. It might just be, that this Championship should be staged here at Bulwell Forest annually.

PETERS POLISHES IT OFF !
The ever-improving Alex Peters [Notts. Ladies] polished of the Fairhaven Junior International Tournament for girls, at the Fairhaven Golf Club, in Lancashire, with a course breaking record score of 70 in the final round of this newly inaugurated 72 hole junior event, to win the girls event with a four-round total of 313.
Tom Boys of Cheshire won the boys event.
Mitchell Hadfield also qualified for the final days 36 holes. Mitch was lying in 10th place after 36 holes, and at lunchtime on the final day, after shooting a 4 under par 70, he was lying in 4th place, but his final round of 77 left him in 11th position overall.'

NOTTS. JUNIORS START THE SEASON IN STYLE !
Nottinghamshire's Under 16 and Under 14 teams visited Severn Meadows, in Shropshire for the first of their series of matches beginning with the fixture against Shropshire & Herefordshire.
Although the Under 16 team lost the morning foursomes by 3 - 1 on the tricky Severn Meadows course, they fought back strongly in the afternoon to win the singles and emerge overall victors by 6 1/2 - 5 1/2.
The Under 14 team won both its foursomes matches, and rounded off a fine days work by winning all the four singles matches for a clean sweep.

McEVOY TROPHY
Edward Peters [Beeston Fields] and Sam Buckle [Notts] were the only two Nottinghamshire boys who beat the ballot to take part in the strong field for the coveted Peter McEvoy Trophy at Copt Heath Golf Club, Warwickshire.
Both local lads failed to beat the cut after the start of the morning round was delayed due to thick fog, causing the afternoon round to be reduced to nine holes.
Stiggy Hodgson [Sunningdale] took the Trophy at the first extra hole in a sudden-death play-off against fellow England boy international Eddie Pepperell, who birdied the par 4 eighteenth to force a tie.

PETERS MAKES DEBUT FOR ENGLAND
Fifteen year-old Edward Peters made his debut for the England Boys Under 16 squad against an England Boys Under 18 squad. Teams of eight played a training match at theBuckinghamshire Golf Club, which ended with honours even.
The Nottinghamshire lad, who playes out of Beeston Fields Golf Club, paired with J. Heasman, went down by 4 /3 in the morning foursomes, against the strong pairing of Jonathan Bell and Tom Berry.

But it was to be a different story the afternoon, when the improving Peters reversed the morning result and defeated Tom Berry by 4/3.
The Under 16's won the morning foursomes by 2 1/2 - 1 1/2, but lost in the afternoon by 4 1/2 to 3 1/2, leaving the match tied on 6 - 6.

DRAMATIC FINISH TO FOUR COUNTIES
There was an exciting finish to the Four Counties Junior Tournament, which this year was held over the course at Stanton on the Wolds, when the counties of Cheshire and Lancashire were forced into a sudden-death play-off after tying on points with each team winning two matches, and an equal number of matches won. In front of a large crowd of spectators, Cheshire emerged triumphant at the par 3 second extra hole, when Tom Boys of Royal Liverpool GC, who has a look of Jim Furyk about him, knocked his tee shot to within 6 feet and Tom Stuart of St. Annes Olds Links, missed the green and failed to get up and down.

Proud Mum !
Notts boys failed to impress on the opening day, having put Lancashire under severe pressure in the early stages of their opening match they failed to capitalise on the advantage and lost narrowly by 4 -3. In the afternoon games the home team went down with a lack-lustre performance against old rivals Shropshire and Herefordshire by 4 1/2 - 2 1/2. However, on the final day they showed their true mettle with a first-class performance defeating the eventual winners by a similar margin.
Mitch Newton [Notts.GC], the winner of the Nottinghamshire Boys Order of Merit in 2007, was the only Nottinghamshire player to take maximum points with three good wins.

OMINOUS START TO NOTTS. BOYS SEASON
Notts. Boys [Under 18] got off with a poor start to their 2008 season, with a 5 - 1 defeat against Warwickshire Boysat the Rugby GC . For the second year in succession the match was curtailed to the foursomes matches only through torrential rain which water-logged the golf course and caused hazardous conditions for the boys as the river running through the course threatened to burst its banks.
Only Dean Reddington [Sherwood Forest] and Sam Buckle [Notts.] put points on the board for the lack-lustre Nottinghamshire team.

With the annual Four Counties looming the boys will need to sharpen up their game considerable to avoid suffering heavily at the hands of Cheshire, Lancashire and Shropshire and Herefordshire at the Stanton on the Wolds GC immediately following the Easter break.

NOTTS. BOYS PREPARE FOR A BUSY SEASON.
Under the captaincy of Jacob Austin [Notts.] the Nottinghamshire Juniors are preparing hard for a busy season ahead. As last year's East Midlands Champions, they are determined to improve this year with a largely unchanged squad.
Regular coaching sessions have been held during the winter, and also week-end get togethers for bonding on the par three course at Ramsdale, followed by 9 holes on the main course in the afternoons.
There has also been an afternoon session at Cyber-Golf, a new virtual reality indoor golf centre in Nottingham, which proved popular with the lads.
The under 16 squad, under team manager Jack Prescott, have also worked hard and Jack is optimistic for their chances this summer.
Likewise the under 14's, who had a work out in physical training and 9 holes worst ball texas scramble last Saturday at Misterton under the expert eye of club professional, Marcus Bell and his fitness and physio gurus, overseen by the under 14 team manager, Roger Hough. All the boys were full of praise and former County Captain Rob Sallis, who is working this year with all the squads, was most impressed.

UNDER 16's SQUEEZE HOME AGAINST
RAMPANT UNDER 14's
Notts. Under 16's team just squeezed home for a 7 - 5 win against a rampant Under 14's team in the end of season friendly match at Misterton Golf Club.
"It's a good job matches 10 and 11 came in for the Under 16's," said Roger Hough, the Under 14's Team Manager, " or I might have been pulling Jack Prescott [the Under 16's Team Manager] out of the river that runs alongside the 18th !"
The match was played in tremendous spirit and was enjoyed by both sets of players.
It was the first County event held at the newly affiliated golf club at Misterton, which lies some 8 miles north of Retford.

UNDER 16'S RECLAIM OXTON CUP
Notts. Under 16 team reclaimed the Oxton Cup by beating the Oakmere Park [Admiral's] Golf Club juniors in their annual match held during the half-term break. After halving the match in 2007, the County visitors recorded a 4 1/2 - 1/2 win, and although the win was substantial the matches were much tighter than the overall result suggests. This was the final match of the season from a full calender of events.

BEARS WIN MIDLAND BOYS LEAGUE
Warwickshire, who won the West Midlands League title, met Nottinghamshire, the winners of the East Midlands section of the League, on their home turf at Wollaton Park in the 2007 Midland League Final.
But the Warwickshire Bears, with support in force from the Warwickshire Executive, were just too fierce for the boys of Nottinghamshire and took the title and the trophy back to Warwickshire, after a day that started full of promise for the home County, but disintegrated just like the weather as the day progressed.
|
Joe Kerry [Notts.] who won his singles match by 6/5 |
Rob Bardsley raked in a long putt on the final green to take the match against Edward Peters[Beeston Fields] and Dan Reddington [Sherwood Forest] in the morning foursomes. Whilst Simon Booth [Ramsdale Park] partnering Joe Kerry [Notts.] did the same to secure a valuable half, sending the Warwickshire boys into lunch leading by 3 1/2 - 1 1/2.
As the weather worsened in the afternoon so did the Notts. boys performance, with the first two singles matches going to the visitors by huge margins, leaving the home team with a mountain to climb, needing six wins from the remaining eight matches to secure a tie. The task was too nuch and Warwickshire took the singles by 5 1/2 - 4 1/2 and the Midland League Trophy by an overall margin og 9 - 6.

NIPPERS' RYDER CUP RETAINED !
Notts. Nipper's
travelled to Shifnal Golf Club in Shropshire to defend the Nippers' Ryder Cup where they convincingly dispensed with the challenge of the Shropshire & Herefordshire Pee-Wees by 16 matches to 2.
The team of 12, made up of four under 11 year old players, four under 10 year olds, two under 9 year olds and two girls, won the nine hole morning fourballs by 5 1/2 - 1/2, and followed this up with a 10 1/2 - 1 1/2 singles win over nine holes after lunch. This is the fourth year the event has been played, with Nottinghamshire scoring 3 wins, losing by the narrowest of margins at Shifnal two years ago. Shropshire & Herefordshire President Colin Rawlins, presented both teams with commemorative medals after the match.
Team captain, Lew Wood, the Nippers' Tour Team Manager, leads the team in a victory salute after the match.

EDWALTON IMP SHARED
The annual contest for the Edwalton Imp was played over the 9 hole par three course at Edwalton Golf Club in bright, warm sunshine, where 42 competitors played an Am-Am in teams of four comprising a County Boys team player, who acted as team captain, and three others young players, some of which were raw recruits to the game. The team prize was won by Mitchell Slawson [Coxmoor], together with Dominic Cavell [Retford]; Liam Taylor [Rufford Park] and James Abbott [Ramsdale Park] with a nett score of 75 - 33 under par ! The individual prize for the Edwaltom Imp was shared by Sam Buckle Mapperly] and James Credgington [Chilwell Manor] with a gross 56.
The event is sponsored by the Rushcliffe Borough Council, and Head of Leisure, Brian Knowles, was on hand to assist the President, Tony Thorpe, and Cyril Frettingham, who was instrumental in creating the Edwalton Imp in its current format 12 years ago.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE'S JUNIORS CAN
COUNT ON ABACUS
Abacus Lighting is showing its team spirit by sponsoring the Nottinghamshire Union of Golf Clubs to assist in the development of junior golf within the County. And because Abacus are a new commercial sponsor to the NUGC, the Union has been able to double the amount contributed through Sportsmatch and lottery funding.

The Abacus Lighting Team
Abacus recently entered a team in the inaugural Nottinghamshire Am-Am fund-raising golf day, held at the Newark Gol Club, which was organised by immediate Past President, Trevor Coupe, with the support of Basher Promaotions. Thirty-eight teams took part, including a team led by international criketing star Sir Garfield Sobers.
Great news for the Union and its stars of the future !
