NOTTS AMATEUR STROKE PLAY AND OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP
Despite only 32 Amateurs and 7 professionals playing in the event the day and competition was fiercely fought. Newarks Paul Bagshaw led the way in the Open with a 69 and Cameron Steedman (NottsGC) was the leading Amateur with a 70 Gross. For those not familiar with the format of the competition, the amateur can win both their Championship and the Open, whereas the Pros can only win the Open.
The afternoon round proved a classic tussle between the Pro’s with Bagshaw and Oakmere Andy Willey tied the lead on 142. Leading Amateur Steedman faded in the afternoon to a 79. This left evergreen Ross Overton (Sherwood Forest GC) 73 + 74 being the leading Amateur until Beeston Fields Jake Benson tied him on the same score. They looked set for a playoff for the Amateur trophy along with the likelihood of a playoff being required for the Open Trophy.
Then came along Darren Kirton (College Pines GC) to steal the Amateur Trophy with a superb 70 to go with his 74 in the morning to win his first Amateur by 3 shots.
Darren has been a superb golfer for many years perhaps not getting the recognition he deserved.
This left just the Open to be decided, so off went Bagshaw and Willey to contest a 3-hole playoff.
Bagshaw played the steadier golf and triumphed.
