SECOND TEAM WIN LEAGUE - UPDATED
The county 2nd team under the captaincy of Brett Marsden have won the Midland league title. In their final game they overcame Shropshire & Herefordshire 10 to 5 at Worksop, to lift the title. Coming into the match they were tied with Derbyshire after 4 matches but with Derbyshire going down at home to Warwickshire 8 matches to 7, the title went to Nottinghamshire.
Brett has built a strong team around him and the atmosphere has been superb all year, great credit to him and all his players, the county feel quite rightly very proud.
Congratulations must also go to 1st team Captain Andy Cook, who led his team to 2nd place in the league with a fine 8 to 7 victory away from home over Shropshire & Herefordshire. Warwickshire ran out comfortable winners, winning every match but Nottinghamshire fought them all the way.
A great season for both teams and well done to all the players who have supported the county this year.
First Team Report
The County 1st team played their final match of the season away to Shropshire & Herefordshire on Sunday 2nd of September at Bridgnorth Golf Club. Although we couldn't now win the league it was still important to finish off a great season and cement second place.
The morning foursomes didn't go our way losing 3.5 - 1.5, so we were going to have to show our fighting qualities. And the team did exactly that with Scott Hamilton getting our first point. Sam Claypole, Callum Fern, and James Booth added 3 more points, then Lewis Parker 2 down with 3 to play gained a valuable half point refusing to give in. Well played Lewis. Oscar Bartram narrowly lost 1 down but fought hard to the end. Mike White cruised to a 3&2 victory, it's what Mike does! Killian Ryan won his match 4&3 giving us 6.5 points and enough to win the match 8-7. It was Killian's first match in the team and he earned 1 and a half points on the day. Good work Killian and I hope many more games for you in the future.
So, a win for Nottinghamshire on the day and second place in the League - what a great season!
This is my last match as County Captain and I would like to thank all players who have represented the County. You've worked hard, we've had some laughs and it's been a pleasure to work with you all. You have shown commitment, a great desire to win and you should all be proud of what you've achieved. Well done!
And always remember - If you can't win, don't lose!
Second Team Report
The last second team game of the season found Notts taking on Shropshire and Herefordshire at Worksop golf club on a scorching day. A very important home game, as Notts were tied at the top of the midlands league with Derbyshire, also playing a final home game.
A very cohesive Notts team produced a nice foursomes performance to leave Notts 3-2 up at lunch, with only 1 match losing (by only 1 hole).
Then a solid and commanding afternoon performance followed, with Notts winning 6 and halving 2 of the 10 singles games- thus winning the afternoon session 7-3, and the overall match 10-5. This also secured a league victory, as Derbyshire didn’t manage a win in their last match (to which I’d like to offer genuine commiserations, as I know they wanted a league win, just as much as we did).
At this stage I’d like to thank and acknowledge all the efforts from every player this year. The attitude and approach have been great.
I’d also like to thank James Thompson, Pete Lockley & James Freeman for a great county coaching day at the start of the season, which got us all together and off to a decisive unbeaten run against Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Staffordshire, Worcestershire & Derbyshire.
As always, it’s been a pleasure and honour to captain the team. Hopefully the Notts teams can continue their great work and momentum in 2019.
