NOTTINGHAMSHIRE SENIORS VICTORIOUS
When I accepted the opportunity to be Nottinghamshire’s Senior County Captain last year this was the one match report I wanted to be able to submit.
2018 CHAMPIONSHIP WINNERS – NOTTINGHAMSHIRE
For those unaware it’s 6 men playing two rounds with the top 5 scores to count AM and PM. It is also without doubt the hardest and most stressful day’s golf of any county player’s year.
Listed below are the scores recorded and it goes without saying that Knocker’s 2 round total of 142, 2 under par, was quite simply sensational. Along with a 148 total from an in-form Ian Gretton, it enabled, particularly in the afternoon, tired and weary team players the opportunity to drop a few shots and us still to be victorious.
What was very pleasing was that every member of the team contributed to the day and the battling qualities of everyone shone out.
Chris (Knocker) Powell 73 69
Ian Gretton 73 75
Nigel Furniss 77 76
James MacLachlan 74 86
Glen Sherwood 77 83
Derek McJannet 82 79
To prove the quality of the opponents Knocker won the best gross score on the day by only 1 shot!!!
The team won by only 3 shots from last years winners Warwickshire. The overall average score was 3.6 over par for all 10 counting scores, that stat is a record for the event and totally exceeded everyone’s expectations. The whole day was wonderful.
One very sad note was that our current Midland Seniors Champion and England International, Charles Banks, had to withdraw as his Mother passed away on Tuesday night. Derek came in at short notice and his late 79 was vital. Charles came and supported late in the morning, his commitment to the team is exemplary.
I would like to thank the many people who turned up on the day to give us support – this always helps, and we always win when President Bob attends – as he normally does.
Now having qualified for the National finals via Strokeplay we face playing Matchplay against the winners of the 3 other regions of England to find the National Champions. The team increases to 8, the Final is at Stanton – on – the – Wolds, which was all the more reason for us to win, because we are at home!!
I’m now going to spend many hours in a dark room and try and make some very difficult selection decisions. What a great problem to have!
