REPORT OF ENGLISH MEN'S COUNTY CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
The quality of the players involved was exceptional including current Walker cup player Tom Plumb, a host of England internationals including Matty Lamb and a many other leading amateurs who have had national and International success including Tom Sherreard who has had a top 20 finish in the Open championship
England Golf provided a fabulous and well run event and Huddersfield GC provided a great venue for such a prestigious competition. Unfortunately an incredibly wet period of weather was to test the golf course, the organisers and most significantly the players. The round robin format had to be adjusted from 3 days of morning foursomes and an afternoon of singles matchplay to be played as singles only matches over 2 days.
Match 1 for Nottinghamshire was against a relatively young Kent side with many of their team under the age of 22. After 9 holes Nottinghamshire were trailing by 6 games to 1 and there was the potential for a whitewash but a fantastic fightback saw 3 games go to the 18th with the possibility of a win if Nottinghamshire could convert all 3 games as wins. It was not to be so we narrowly lost out by 4.5 games to 2.5.
Match 2 was against arguably the pre tournament favourites Northumberland who had beaten perennial winners Yorkshire to win the Northern qualifier and who had won their first match against Somerset. A tremendous start by the Nottinghamshire players secured a lead after 9 holes and with 3 holes to go in 3 of the matches a win was still possible but a combination of amazing recovery play by Northumberland and some misfortune for the Nottinghamshire players on the 18th hole saw all 3 games go to Northumberland.
Match 3 was against a Somerset team who had secured a halved match against Kent. Most of the games were incredibly tight but with Somerset holding the lead. As with the previous two matches it came down to 3 games going to the 18th hole but this time Nottinghamshire managed to convert all 3 games to secure a well earned win by 4 games to 3 and to finish the tournament as the 3rd best County in England for 2019!
Huge congratulations to the Nottinghamshire team of Cole Betteridge, Jordan Boulton, Adam Dorricott, Martin Foulkes, Darren Kirton, Ross Overton and Mark Porter for their achievement and for creating some new history for Nottinghamshire County golf. A special mention too for Jordan Boulton who managed a 100% record in winning all 3 games playing at No.1.
