NOTTS. MATCHPLAY CHAMPIONSHIP
In superb summer sunshine the handful of spectators who ventured down to the Notts. Golf Club at Hollinwell were treated to a feast of golf. On the first day of play sixteen of the County's leading amateur golfers competed for the coveted trophy, over a course prepared to an excellent standard.

Notts. Golf Club [Hollinwell]
In the opening rounds Mitch Hadfield [Worksop], the Notts. Amateur Strokeplay champion went down 3 /1 to Greg Hill over his home course. Whilst Time Clarke [Coxmoor], who flew in from Paris to compete in the event, put Joe Kerry [Notts.] out of contention by the handsome margin of 8/6.
But the outstanding match of the day was the quarter final between Sam Matlby [Chilwell Manor] and former match and strokeplay champion Rob Sallis [Notts.].
In a 'ding-dong' battle, which swung between each of the players in turn, the match finished all-square after 18 holes, after Maltby missed from close range on the 16th. The opening extra holes were halved in par, with Sallis returning the favour at the par 5 third, having chipped close to give himself a birdie opportunity.
On the long par 4 fourth Sallis drove into the rough, whilst Maltby found the fairway with his drive and found the green with his second. Sallis could only hack his second forward, chipping to 10 feet with his third. Maltby calmly rolled his putt close, and watched Sallis narrowly shave the hole, conceding victory to the Chilwell youngster after 22 holes of play.
Maltby tees off at the first extra hole watched
by the Deputy President, Alec Shepperson
Sunday saw the commencement of the Semi-final rounds get off to a disappointing start, when Mitch Newton who had battled illness in his quarter final match against Ben Smith [Worksop], had to withdraw from the semi-finals, giving Coxmoor's Mark Betteridge a clear passage into the finals without a blow being struck.
In the other semi- final Greg Hill [Notts.] met Sam Maltby in another epic battle in which both players reached the turn all square in level par. Maltby took the lead at the par 4 fifteenth with a birdie, but gave it back on the 17th, and the match finished all square after 18 holes.
Both players had chances at the first extra hole, missing from short range. And at the 20th Hill went long after his shot to the green took a hard bounce. Maltby visited the rught hand roungh with his approach shot but pitched close to give himself a chance of a par, only to see his opponent chip disappear into the cup for a birdie and the match.
A tremendous game played in the very best of spirits.
In the final Mark Betteridge took control over Hill from the outset, taking the first with a par, from which point he was never behind in the match. The Coxmoor veteran added 5 five birdies in the next thirteen holes to extend his lead and win by the comfortable margin of 4/3.

Mark Betteridge receives the Notts. Matchplay Trophy from NUGC President, Stan Yeomans,
with losing finalist Greg Hill and NUGC Deputy President, Alec Shepperson
In accepting the trophy and winner's medal Betteridge paid tribute to the NUGC and said that he "had waited 25 years to get his hands on the trophy, which the Deputy President, Alec Shepperson, another Coxmoor member , had won in 1964".

The weather was kind, but cold, for the field of fifty pairs of players who competed in the Notts. Amateur Foursomes Championship at the Notts. GC yesterday, and the Hollinwell course was at its best, presenting a stern test for those who strayed from the fairways to find the punishing rough.
Following a disappointing opening 77, David Elliott [Chilwell Manor] and Ross Overton [Coxmoor], fought back with a fine level par round of 72 in the afternoon to retain the title they won last year at Chilwell Manor GC by a stroke from the Worksop pairing of Darren Kirton and Ben Smith, who led the field after the morning round with a 74, which included a triple bogey at the par 4 11th.

The latest rising star to emerge for the Worksop Golf Club, which has produced so many outstanding players throughout its history, is teenager Mitchell Hadfield, who recently added the Nottinghamshire Amateur Strokeplay Championship to his tally, over the demanding course at the Notts. GC.
In a nail-biting finish, which at one time looked as though it might go to a four-way play-off, the talented eighteen year-old bravely holed a 6 foot putt on the final hole in front of a large gallery, to edge out last year's champion Ross Overton [Coxmoor GC] by a single stroke together with Mitchell Newton and Richard Smith both from the host club Notts.

Mitchell Hadfield receives the Notts. Amateur Strokeplay Championship Trophy from Stan Yeomans [NUGC President]

COUNTY MEMBERSHIP SCHEME COMPETITION
CANCELLED THROUGH LACK OF SUPPORT
In spite of repeated expressions of concern by the NUGC Tournament Committee, it has been necessary to cancel the County Membership Scheme Competition scheduled to be held at the Oakmere Park [Admiral's] Golf Club on Thursday, the 6th May, through lack of support.
Concern has been voiced that the popularity of this annual event has been waning for a number years, and that it may be become necessary to cancel the event if numbers did not show a significant increase.
Competition Secretary, Martin Hathway, reported that, at the closing date for entries earlier today, only ten pairs of competitors had posted an entry. Entry fees will be reimbirsed.

INACTIVE HANDICAPS
Following a lengthy discussion on the subject of ‘inactive’ handicaps, at the NUGC Executive Committee Meeting held at Beeston Fields Golf Club on Thursday, the 11th February, 2009, it was unanimously agreed that with immediate effect:
When the handicap of a player is deemed to be ‘inactive’ it is not acceptable for that player to compete in NUGC Championships and Events in which a CONGU handicap is required.
Players entering NUGC Championships and Events must ensure they are able to reassure the Competitions Secretary that their handicap is not inactive. [e.g By providing a copy of a currently valid handicap certificate signed by the Club Secretary.]
This condition applies to all Inter-club Scratch League events, the NUGC Junior League matches, and the Men’s and Mixed Inter-club Foursomes matches. It will not be applied to NUGC Nippers’ Tour events and the Edwalton Imp.
It is the responsibility of Club Team Captains to ensure that players selected to represent the respective golf club are in possession of a valid and active handicap, and are able to produce such evidence as may be requested.
All competitors holding a CONGU handicap wishing to enter any English Golf Union event must be possession of an ‘active’ CONGU handicap.

STANTON LADIES ARE JUST CHAMPION !
In overcast conditions, early scoring proved difficult in the Nottingham Evening Post Ladies Final, held over the course at the Notts. Golf Club. Although the Stanton on the Wolds Ladies Team of Rosemary Hodges, Sue Arnold, Cathy Burnside and Jo Frampton overcame them with a display of confident golf, returning a winning score of 81 Stableford points, which included 22 points over the four holes following the turn.
With two scores to count from the teams of four, it was just too much for the other twenty teams, although Springwater matched Stanton's inward half of 41 points to claim second place, ahead of Beeston Fields, who collected three points over two holes which proved costly.
Oakmere Park [Admiral's] finished outside the prizes as a result of a wrongly entered gross score marred an otherwise excellent card.
The prizes were presented by Notts. Ladies Captain, Pam Loch, who together with Anne Mather made valuable contributions in staging the event.
The NUGC Deputy President, Alec Shepperson, watched the players tee-off under the watchful eye of Brian Saunders, the NUGC Official Starter.
