NORWOOD PARK - 22nd JULY, 2010

The Nottinghamshire Nippers' 2010 Tour got under way at Norwood Park, with 50 youngsters taking part aged between 5 and 11 years. Unfortunately, the day was spoiled by the weather, with thunder and lightening bringing the event to a premature close for safety reasons.

Oliver Drew [Sherwood Forest] set the early pace in the under 11 section, returning a level par score of 36 for the front nine holes, including an eagle on the 6th hole. Whilst 8 year old Evan Wood [Coxmor] included a birdie 2 in his round.

NOTTINGHAMSHIRE NIPPERS' RETAIN RYDER CUP

AND CLOSE SEASON IN STYLE !

Nottinghamshire Nippers' retained the Nippers' Ryder Cup at The Shropshire Golf Centre, Telford in a thrilling series of matches against the Shropshire and Herefordshire Pee-Wee's on Tuesday, the 25th August, 2009.

The annual match, which was inaugurated in 2004, was the brain-child of Roy Case, the Nottinghamshire Secretary, and Ron Snelling, the Shropshire & Herefordshire Chairman of Junior Golf. Together they conceived the idea of an annual match between the leading players, boys and girls, under the age of 11 - 10 and 9 years, in the Nottinghamshire Nippers' and Shropshire & Herefordshire Pee-Wee tours, and donated the trophy, which Nottinghamshire has won five times in all.

In the morning the teams play four-ball matches, and at lunch this year Nottinghamshire team was ahead by the narrowest of margins 4 1/2 - 3 1/2. Daniel O'Loughlin [Ruddington Grange] and Liam Storey [Retford] halved a tense matchand james Corden [Cotgrave Place] holed a good putt on the final green, with Sharna Betteridge [Notts Ladies] to share the points in their game. James Abbott [Ramsdale Park] paired with Eric Tuttey [Stanton on the Wolds] the leading pair in the Nippers' Order of Merit came up against tough opposition and were closed out early by 4/3 in the top game.

Jason Law [Oakmere Park] tees off in front of a good crowd of supporters

There was tremendous support for both the teams, from parents, grandparents, and many former players, including Edward Peters an England under 16 international, who played in the very first Nippers' Tour event in 2004 .

In spite of an adverse forecast the weather in the morning was kind to everyone, and the players managed to complete the opening 9 holes in fine weather. Later in the day however several of the youngsters suffered heavy rain showers although they were hardly put out by the conditions.

In the afternoon singles matches the visitors dominated play winning 10 1/2 games to 5 1/2, to win the match and retain the Trophy by 15 - 9. Oliver Maltby Smith [Sherwood Forest] fought well to take the point in his game at the final hole, and Sharna Betteridge [Notts. Ladies] came back from two down with two to play to halve her match on the last.

At the closing ceremony after the match the Shropshire & Herefordshire President, John Jones, paid tribute to the sportsmanship and standard of play of all the players, and presented them with mementoes to mark the occasion. He congratulated Lew and Maggie Wood, the Nottinghamshire Team Captains, and Mike Roberts, the Shropshire and Herefordshire Team Captain on the high standards set by players of such a young age.

A truly geat day was enjoyed by all, and in the closing words of the Nottinghamshire President, Stan Yeomans, " the game of golf was the winner."

2009 NIPPERS' TOUR COMES TO AN END

The final tournament of the Nippers' Tour was held at Trent Lock GC on the 20th August, bringing to an end the 2009 season, unfortunately marred by the second event scheduled for the Oakmere Park [Commanders] course having to be cancelled due to severe electrical storms. In addition to the above, this year's tour held events over the golf courses at Norwood Park, Rufford Park and Southwell. Players under the ages of 11 play five rounds of nine holes in as many weeks during the summer holidays, with their best four rounds counting to determine the overall winners in each of the five age groups, under 11's, under 10's, under 9's, under 8's and under 7's. There are also special groups for players under the ages of 6 and 5, who play fewer holes. Approximately 250 youngsters competed in this year's events at the various clubs, and the winners and full results can be found in the Order of Merit and Results web pages

It simply remains for the team of 12 selected for the Nippers' Ryder Cup, which this year will be played over the course at the Shropshire GC, to successfully defend the trophy and bring it back to Nottinghamshire.

NIPPERS' TOUR COMES TO A CLOSE!

The final event of the 2007 Nippers' Tour was held at Trent Lock, on a glosous warm and sunny day. Scores in each of the categories showed a marked improvement over the previous year which is an indication of the progress being made in junior golf in Nottinghamshire. Jacob Walker [Radcliffe on Trent] had the best score of the day with a 9 hole total of 37, which took him to the top of the final order of merit, beating Coxmoor's Joseph Hague into second spot. In the under 10's Jordan Boulton [Notts.] returned a 38 to win the order of merit from James Hoolis [Wollaton Park], whilst James Abbott [Ramsdale Park] had a flawless total of 40 points to win the under 9's trophy from Bethany Griffin [Horsley Lodge]. Oliver Matlby Smith [Springwater] continues to show promise, winning the under 8's section from Jake Benson [Beeston Fields], and Killian Ryan [Unattached][ was more than a match for those in the under 7's group, with Sharna Betteridge taking the runner up spot.

The fourth tour event of the series was held at Norwood Park, re-arranged from a few weeks ago as a result of the torrential rain which brought the event to a stand-still. The conditions were dry, but very cold and breezy, yet the youngsters scored well on a difficult day, with Joseph Hague [Coxmoor] returning the best card of the day with a 37.
Oliver Wilson, the Nottinghamshire European tour player, was on hand to present the prizes and to sign autographs for the enthusiastic youngsters.

The third meeting of the Nippers' Tour took place at the Hucknall Golf Centre, formerly known as the Leen Valley Golf Club, in windy and occasionally showery conditions. The course and conditions proved a tough test although the scores reflected the degree of difficulty there were some exceptional scores on the day. In particulaer Jacob Walker [Radcxliffe on Trent] and Jordan Boulton [Notts.] who both returned cards of 39.

Another excellent entry of over sixty Nottinghamshire Nipper's continued their series of competitions with the second event held at the Rufford Park Golf and Country Club. Scoring was low demonstrating just how much the youngsters are benefiting from competiting in the tournaments, with many youngsters reducing their handicaps, including 'pint-sized' Cole Betteridge [Notts.], the son of the Kilton Forest professional, who reduced his handicap to 17.

Jacob Walker  [Radcliffe on Trent] set the standard for the day with a fantastic round of 36, just one stroke over par, to lead the under 11 age group, and shot to the top of the overall order of merit with an aggregate total of 82.

Rhiannon Linacre [Coxmoor] continuesd her run of form with a 51 to head the girls order of merit with a ggregate total of 110.
